  • Foxwell has spent the majority of the off-season playing in the NZNBL playing with the Taranaki Airs
  • He starred in the team's first game, scoring 19 points.

Owen Foxwell has found himself on the other side of the world, showcasing his talents 16,000km away from his familiar South East Melbourne surroundings. The 21-year-old Phoenix guard is currently at the prestigious Adidas Eurocamp in Italy, standing before the watchful eyes of NBA scouts, staff, and talent agents in an invite-only exhibition that could potentially shape his future in basketball.

For Foxwell, the path ahead isn't uncharted territory. He's drawing significant inspiration from former Cairns Taipan Taran Armstrong, who successfully navigated a similar journey that ultimately led him to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA.

"Watching him go to something like [the Adidas Eurocamp] and then come out in the NBL and have an incredible year, and now he's in the NBA, it's great," Foxwell revealed to Phoenix Media. "So, I'm for sure taking inspiration from that and trying to follow that path."

The Gravity of Opportunity

The significance of this opportunity wasn't immediately apparent to Foxwell. By his own admission, he knew little about the Eurocamp before receiving his invitation. However, the magnitude of this experience is gradually becoming clear as he prepares to take to the court.

"It'll sink in when we hit the floor in a game I think, seeing all the people in the gym and you do know who's watching so it's just a great opportunity," Foxwell acknowledged.

This opportunity didn't materialise out of thin air. The young guard has experienced a remarkable few months of basketball development. He's been dominant in the New Zealand NBL with the Taranaki Airs, earned his first selection for the Australian Boomers squad during the recent Trans-Tasman Series, and now finds himself as part of the inaugural NBL Next Stars team competing in this global tournament.

Summer League Dreams

A strong showing in Italy could be transformative for Foxwell's career trajectory. Success at the Eurocamp might lead to an invitation to join an NBA Summer League roster – a logical progression and an opportunity that aligns perfectly with his aspirations.

"As a kid growing up, your end goal is to play in the NBA and Summer League is NBA level-type games and experience," Foxwell said, expressing his enthusiasm for potential opportunities. "Jumping on opportunities is important, so if I get that opportunity I'll be jumping straight into it for sure."

This sentiment reflects the mindset of a player who recognises the fleeting nature of such chances in professional basketball. The path from the NBL to the NBA has become increasingly viable in recent years, with players like Armstrong demonstrating that the transition is possible with the right combination of talent, opportunity, and dedication.

Familiar Faces in Foreign Places

Foxwell isn't navigating this experience alone. He's joined by NBA draft hopeful and fellow South East Melbourne Phoenix Next Star, Malique Lewis. Their presence together provides a welcome sense of familiarity in what is otherwise uncharted territory.

The two aren't just sharing accommodation in the picturesque canal-lined city of Venice; they're also demonstrating their on-court chemistry during the camp.

"Malique and I are actually the two oldest guys here, so we're leaders in a way and that's something we've prided ourselves on in the last few days," Foxwell explained, highlighting their emerging leadership roles within the NBL Next Stars contingent.

Their prior experience playing together has established a foundation of understanding that's proving valuable in this new environment. "We worked well in the back end of last year and played a lot of minutes together... I do [look for him] but he's always in the right spot so that makes it easy."

This established connection might prove advantageous as they compete against international talent, many of whom may be playing together for the first time.

The NBL-to-NBA Pipeline

The journey Foxwell is undertaking represents a broader trend in Australian basketball – the growing viability of the NBL as a legitimate pathway to the NBA. Armstrong's transition from the Cairns Taipans to the Golden State Warriors serves as a powerful example of this pipeline in action.

This route has gained significant traction in recent years, with players recognising the NBL as a professional league that offers high-level competition, development opportunities, and increasingly, visibility to NBA scouts. The NBL's Next Stars program, which both Foxwell and Lewis are part of, has been instrumental in strengthening this connection.

For young Australian players with NBA aspirations, seeing compatriots make this leap provides tangible proof that their dreams are achievable. Armstrong's success story isn't just inspirational for Foxwell; it represents a blueprint that he can potentially follow.

The Global Stage

The Adidas Eurocamp represents more than just a basketball exhibition; it's a global gathering of talent that offers participants unprecedented exposure. For Foxwell, performing well here could accelerate his career trajectory significantly.

The camp's structure, which will see the NBL Next Stars participate in five games plus potential finals if they qualify, provides multiple opportunities for players to demonstrate their abilities. Each game represents another chance to catch the eye of decision-makers who could influence their futures.

This format rewards consistency and improvement – qualities that professional teams value highly. Foxwell's ability to perform under this pressure could be as important as his technical skills and physical attributes.

Beyond the basketball court, Foxwell is making the most of his time in Italy. Before the intensive schedule of the camp began, he took the opportunity to explore Venice – one of the world's most distinctive cities – and sample traditional Italian cuisine, including authentic gnocchi.
